Arcanum 4: The Emperor

Order and boundaries
Clear rules and boundaries give you a foundation for building things that last.
The Emperor sits on a stone throne decorated with rams’ heads, wearing armour beneath a red robe and holding a sceptre. Bare mountains rise behind him, and he rules calmly because he knows what he is responsible for. You build what is meant to outlast a passing mood: rules, roles and commitments kept.
Gifts and potential pitfalls
- Gift
- You give things structure, can say “this is mine and that is yours”, and keep agreements. You take responsibility without making a drama of it.
- Shadow
- When order matters greatly to you, it is easy to slip into giving orders and harder to compromise. Check occasionally whether a rule still serves the people it was made for.
- First step
- Examine one of your rules at home or work and decide whether to keep or change it.
In a pair
When this arcanum is at the centre of a shared matrix:
There is only one throne, so the rules of your home require agreement from both of you.
In the karmic tail
When this arcanum appears at one of the three points below the centre:
Disorder is your cue to take the reins, assign tasks and make sure everything goes as it should. Afterwards you find you are still carrying most of the burden. Give one specific task to one person and do not redo it, even if their result differs from yours.
Where this arcanum appears in the matrix
The centre and other points are sums, so this arcanum can appear for many different dates. Three points depend directly on the date:
- Point A (personality): birth day: 4, 31 (3 + 1 = 4).
- Point B (birth month): April.
- Point C (sum of birth-year digits), 1900–2026: 2011 (2 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 4), 2020 (2 + 0 + 2 + 0 = 4). Number of such years: 3.
