Your 2027 year theme: how to calculate it from your birth date

One point that changes each year

The matrix calculated from your birth date stays with you. Personality, centre, Heaven and Earth have the same numbers whether you calculate them today or ten years from now. One point, however, gets a new value each year: the year theme.

You calculate it from your birth day and month and the digits of the year you are interested in. The result is one of the 22 arcana. This guide covers 2027: the formula, calculations for several dates and what to do with the result. We use the calendar year, January to December 2027.

The formula for the 2027 year theme

The whole calculation fits on one line:

year theme = birth day + birth month + sum of the year’s digits; if the result exceeds 22, add its digits

The digits of 2027 add up to 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11. This is the same for everyone, so for 2027 always add 11 to your birth day and month.

The same rule applies as throughout the matrix. Each point must be between 1 and 22, the number of Major Arcana. If the sum is greater than 22, add its digits. The guide How to calculate the matrix shows the same reduction step by step.

Step by step

1. Take your birth day without reducing it: for 24 October, use 24. In the matrix itself a day over 22 is reduced first (24 becomes 2 + 4 = 6), but for the year theme our calculator adds the whole day. Other sites sometimes use a different method.
2. Add the month number: January is 1, October 10, December 12.
3. Add 11, the sum of the digits of 2027.
4. If the result is greater than 22, add its digits.
5. Example: 24 + 10 + 11 = 45, and 4 + 5 = 9, The Hermit.

The year of birth does not enter this calculation. People born on the same day and month have the same theme in 2027, even if they are decades apart in age.

In 2027 the sums range from 13 (1 January: 1 + 1 + 11) to 54 (31 December: 31 + 12 + 11). Adding the digits once is always enough: no number up to 54 has a digit sum greater than 13 (49 gives 4 + 9 = 13). A curiosity follows: nobody has theme 1 or 2 in 2027. Sums from 13 to 22 stay unchanged, and among larger sums the smallest result comes from 30, giving 3 + 0 = 3.

Examples for several dates

These dates show each case: a result without reduction, one addition of digits, 29 February and two dates with the same arcanum.

Calculate a 29 February birthday normally as 29 and 2, even though that day does not appear on the 2027 calendar. Different dates can also give the same arcanum: 24 October and 31 December lead to The Hermit because 45 and 54 have the same digits.

Themes are not distributed equally. In 2027 The Hierophant, The Lovers and The Chariot occur most often, each for 38⁠–⁠40 of the 366 possible birthdays. The rarest is 14, Temperance, appearing only for people born on 2 January and 1 February.

Is it simply one number higher than in 2026?

The digits of 2026 add up to 10, and those of 2027 to 11, so the sum itself increases by one. For 326 of 366 possible birthdays the result also increases by one. A 24 October birthday gives theme 8, Justice, in 2026 and theme 9, The Hermit, in 2027.

The exceptions are dates where the 2026 sum was 22, 29, 39 or 49. The new sum then crosses the limit of 22 or a multiple of ten, and the result falls. For 10 September, 2026 gives 10 + 9 + 10 = 29, and 2 + 9 = 11, Strength. In 2027 it gives 30, and 3 + 0 = 3, The Empress. It is therefore better to calculate from the beginning each time than to add one to last year’s result.

What the year theme means

The year theme works best as a question you carry with you for twelve months. Each arcanum describes an ordinary aspect of life: order, patience, courage to begin, the need for quiet, or care for what is growing. Throughout the year you can notice where that theme appears in your life and what you want to do with it.

The result does not describe events. It cannot tell you what will happen or when, and there is no need to fear it. The same arcanum can lead two people to completely different reflections, because each applies the question to their own life.

Some examples of such questions:

• The Hermit: how much of my week belongs only to my own thoughts?
• The Empress: which of my commitments still brings me joy?
• Strength: where do I lose patience most quickly, and what helps me then?
• The Fool: what am I putting off while waiting for the perfect moment?
• The Hierophant: which rules do I accept because that is how things are done, and which do I truly choose?

Working with the theme throughout the year

You do not need special tools: a sheet of paper, a note on your phone and some attention are enough.

Write down the question. Phrase it in your own words so it sounds like something you truly want to explore. A short question is easier to remember.

Return to it from time to time. Each month or quarter, add a sentence: what caught your attention recently, what surprised you, or what changed in your perspective.

Choose one small step. The year theme does not require grand resolutions. If you have The Empress, for example, you might, every Sunday, write down one thing from the past week that brought you joy. For The Hermit, it might be fifteen minutes of quiet without your phone.

Look back in December. At the end of 2027, read all your notes. Often only with distance can you see that the question accompanied you through matters that were not yet on the horizon in January.

If the result does not speak to you at all, that is fine too. Put it aside and return when you feel calmer. Sometimes a question makes sense only after a few weeks; sometimes another point in your matrix will tell you more.

The year theme and the whole matrix
